Camp Kids Pick Up Trash in Arcata

ARCATA, CA (KIEM) – Kids are picking up trash up in the Arcata community and using it to make sculptures.

Redwood Day Camp goers ages five to 12 split into five teams of 20. They had to go out and clean up trash in places like the Redwood Forest, the Arcata Plaza, and Community Center.

Then they returned to Redwood Park and used the recyclables and trash they collected to make sculptures out of it. Once that was done, they presented the sculptures to their peers. Its all an effort to make picking up trash fun for the youth.

“Initially some of them were kind of not that excited. They were like why are we picking up trash? But then as soon as they got into it, they were laughing they were chanting. They were like so excited to find cool different pieces for the sculptures we were building,” said Andy Beronilla a Camp Staff Leader and Coordinator.

“I had lots of fun, because we did some cheers, and we made flags out of shirts and we made sculptures. It was really fun,” said Taylor Bowen a Camp goer and 8-Year-Old McKinleyville Resident.

The Redwood Day Camp has different themes every week. For more information head over to cityofarcata.org.
