EUREKA, CA (KIEM) – Students from the University of Texas at Austin are biking from campus and rolling through Eureka as part of a fundraiser for cancer.

The entire trip is a 70-day bike ride that’s over 4,000 miles to Anchorage, Alaska.

There are 28 bikers on this route, and all of them had to raise at least $4,500 for cancer research. But it doesn’t stop there, they also had to ride 2,000 training miles with their team. And lastly, all of the students had to go through an application process to be part of the 18-month program.

One student says she is riding because she wants to show minorities can raise that much money and bike the distance.

“A lot of minorities don’t think that they can do this. I know my friends didn’t really think they can do this, because when you have to raise $4,500 to be a part of it. I just want to show them that even though you may not have the connections that other students have or may not come from the wealthiest background, you can still do it. By panhandling, by asking people, its possible,” said Cristina Sanchez, a Texas 4000 for Cancer Biker.
