Grand Jury releases report to tackle homelessness

EUREKA (KIEM)- The Humboldt County Civil Grand Jury has released its report from 2018 to 2019, tackling homelessness in the county.

Back in 2016, the City of Eureka and Humboldt County partnered together to adopt a “Housing First” approach to the homeless situation.

The housing first approach is to place a homeless person into permanent housing without pre-conditions such as sobriety or participation in mental health programs. Once they are housed, they will receive such services.

The method has been proven to work, but there is a lack of adequate stock housing and could take years to get the homeless housed.

Right now there is no perfect solution, but a number of recommendations in the report that could improve living conditions for everyone.
