Fortuna to replace three Culverts to help Eliminate Flooding

FORTUNA, Ca (KIEM)– Fortuna is replacing three culverts under a section of roadway on Fortuna Boulevard. The purpose of the project is to eliminate the need for flood insurance.

Funding for the $2.5 million project comes from Fema’s Hazard Mitigation Program, and Measure E. Construction crews will replace three culverts and widen the Hillside Creek Channel upstream to Rohnerville Road.

The project hopes to relieve over 100 residents from experiencing flooding. The city said when all of the construction is done, many homeowners will no longer be required to have flood insurance.

“It’s the last phase in a three-phase project to eliminate the flood plain within the city that’s caused by Rohner Creek. [Before] Rohner Creek over topped its banks,” said Fortuna City Manager Merritt Perry.

The project started back in 2009 and the last phase is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
