BLUE LAKE, Ca (KIEM)-The Mad River Festival is back at Dell’Arte in Blue Lake. They feature a variety of entertainment from here on the North Coast to around the world. Through the Waves, is a play that was created, directed, and performed by three women.

The Mad River Festival brings visitors to Blue Lake every year. They have performances going on outside and inside the Dell’Arte Theater. There is something always going on throughout the month.

“The Mad River Festival [has] just been this year-round thing that has sort of just become its own thing in Humboldt County,” said Alyssa Hughlett, the Stage Manager.

Through the Waves is a highly-physical play that tells the story of a woman who is grieving over her lover getting killed in a car accident. Instead of talking or singing, they use acrobatic movements to express their emotions.

“The ups and downs, the waves, the laughter, the hope, the grief, and all of that is embodied in our bodies together and solo on stage with just a table,” said Hannah Gaff, one of the performers in the play.

Typically with acrobatic movements, women need a male partner to perform the stunts. But these women want to show they can do everything on their own.

“There’s this belief that there is a man who flies a woman. The man is strong and flies the woman.  In our company, we blast right through that. All of us fly, all of us base,” said Gaff.

The three women perform the show with no music, and only some recorded audio. One time, they had to improvise the entire performance.

“Actually our first show ever where our computer crash, we did it without any recording, and just bodies and space,” said Gaff.

The women just want the audience to walk away with a different feeling after each performance.

“They will walk away, feeling some emotional charge of like ahhh. I think it’s going to be like that,” said Gaff.

You can catch Through the Waves Thursday until Saturday at Dell’Arte at 8 p.m. But, the festivities don’t stop there. The Humboldt Folklife Festival comes to the Dell’Arte next week. For more information go to DellArte.com.
