Fortuna shows they’re friendly to Fish with Culvert Project

FORTUNA, Ca (KIEM)– Fortuna is showing its also friendly to the fish in the city thanks to a culvert project that is currently underway.

The modifications will be made to 12th Street where it crosses Rohner Creek. The project includes removing portions of the existing culvert so fish can pass freely. The $706,000 project is funded by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Fisheries Restoration Grant Program.

“[We had] to come up with a design that would allow juveniles and adult salmon and steelhead to migrate through. It was a barrier with a small waterfall at the end of it, which prevented the fish from migrating through during the fish passages flows,” said GHD Project Manager Brett Vivyan.

The culvert project will be completed by the end of the year.
