A 2018 homicide suspect is now behind bars

EUREKA (KIEM)- A suspect is behind bars for a homicide that dates back to 2018.

Jason Barnes has been booked for homicide and is being held on 1-million-dollar bail.

Bernhard (Ben) Craig Bertain was involved in a fight on December 22nd 2018 in the Burre Center.

He was reportedly struck with a skateboard deck by Barnes. Bertain did not receive medical treatment at the time. Then on Christmas day 2018, Bertain contact 911 due to trouble breathing and died at the hospital later.

Eureka Police Department was contacted back in December by the Napa County Coroner’s Office, regarding the death investigation of Bertain.

According to the medical examiner, the cause of death was determined to be from initial injuries sustained by Barnes.
