Caltrans District 1 projects $2.7 million Safety Project to be done early 2020

EUREKA, Ca (KIEM)– Right now, construction is underway for Caltrans’ Wabash and Fairfield safety project.

The goal of the $ 2.7 million project is to reduce traffic collisions along Broadway. Starting from West Hawthorne to 14th street. The plan is to install a 4-way traffic signal at West Hawthorne and Broadway, reconfigure the Wabash and Fairfield intersection, and have new sidewalks.

According to Caltrans, these areas have experienced collision rates higher than the statewide average for similar facilities.

“We’d expect to see a reduction in collisions through this segment of the highway. Mainly a reduction in rear-end collisions,” said Jeffrey Pimental, Caltrans Project Manager. “When we close the northbound leg of Fairfield, we eliminating that movement that is essentially being dealt with, with the Hawthorne signals. So now vehicles that were currently today traveling northbound on Fairfield to enter the Broadway facility, they’ll now likely go towards Hawthorne.”

Caltrans expects to complete this project by early next year.
