Mad River Beach County Park Fire Burns 15-Acres

ARCATA (KIEM)- A 15-acre fire that erupted Thursday night at the Mad River Beach County Park has been contained.

Officials received reports on roughly an acre fire. Once officials arrived on the scene, the fire spread to roughly three-acres. With a shift in winds around midnight, the blaze was pushed in the opposite direction and burned fifteen-acres.

Fire crews had to battle the fire on foot through the night and took roughly two-thousand feet of hose to reach the flames in the dunes.

Fire personnel will monitor the burn scar for the next several days. They remind residents not be alarmed if smoke is still visible.

Arcata Fire Chief Justin McDonald reminds everyone that with the warmer temperatures and drier air, a fire ban will be going into effect.
