EUREKA (KIEM)– Small business shopping is dwindling, but it is important to remember why shopping small is beneficial.

Humboldt County is trying to encourage more residents to get out and support the local businesses.

Shopping small is slowly becoming a dying trend. With big businesses coming in, jobs are leaving the county, revenue is going down, and it is becoming harder for local businesses to stay afloat.

Local businesses have a harder time getting certain products over mass industries who hold a buying power, but bringing in local produce and other products is helping them stand out.

The money generated from shopping small gets put back into the community.

According to Civic Economics, if residents and visitors shifted 10-percent of their spending from chains to local businesses, it would generate an additional 2-hundred and 35-million a year in local economic activity, creating many new opportunities and jobs.

Shopping local adds jobs, boosts the economy, and brings the county together.

So when you’re heading out to the store, don’t forget about all of our local businesses.
