Hoopa Prepares for Sovereign Days Celebration

HOOPA, Ca. (KIEM)– Thursday kicked off the start of Sovereign Days Celebration in Hoopa.

The Hoopa Valley Tribe headquarters is getting ready for 31st Annual Sovereign Days Celebration.

It dates back to 1988 when the Hoopa Yurok Settlement was enacted by congress. Sovereign Days used to happen in June, but thanks to Chairman Byron Nelson Junior, he proposed for it to take place in August.

To kick off all the fun this weekend, the Elder Dinner was held Thursday.

Friday, festivities happen all day including a kid zone, watermelon eating contest, and fireworks.

Saturday, a parade kicks offs the day and a softball tournament.
