ARCATA (KIEM) – A new age on the horizon at Humboldt State.

HSU President Tom Jackson gave his welcome back speech to a packed room filled with faculty and staff.

“When the faculty comeback along with the students, there’s just this amazing energy that we want to capitalize on that will slingshot us into an amazing semester,” said Humboldt State University President Tom Jackson.

Jackson has been the University’s president for nearly two months, after succeeding Lisa Rossbacher.

“I hope as a University that we are able to provide our students, a meaningful, positive, educational experience,” said Jackson.

The president praised the university’s achievements, such as securing $8.6 million dollars to turn the Trinity Annex into a Children’s Center and Child Development Lab and reinstating the nursing program.

“The incredible research, the success stories of our students, the student-athletes and the amazing community service,” praised Jackson, “and the 4000 hours of community service they put into this area.”

But he also acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead.

“The other things we will continue to work on as a university but there’s more amazing things than what we often talk about,” said Jackson.

Jackson also focused on the importance of diversity.

“To find places where our campus community and local community can talk about colorblind topics that just people share,”

Students are excited to be back at school, some want to see change to their community and improvements to campus life.

“I’m hoping it to be a big step forward,” said sophomore Nathan Moriarity. “But I think it’s best to look at the glass half-full.”

While some incoming freshmen hope to seen an inclusive environment.
