Former Fire Marshal Jere Buck of Arcata Fire District, passes away

Arcata, Ca., (KIEM) Former Fire Marshal Jere Buck of Arcata Fire District has passed away.

Tuesday, Arcata Fire District along with family and friends of Buck are mourning his death.

Buck served the Arcata Fire District for 44 years until he retired in April of 2000.

Buck came into the fire service back in the 1950’s first as a volunteer fire captain, then to training chief where he trained volunteer and career personnel on fire techniques and tactics.

After some years, Buck was promoted to Fire Marshal where he wore that title with pride until his retirement.

Battalion Chief Sean Campbell shared that Jere Buck was respected, fair, and loved.

“He came to work and did his job. He didn’t get too worked up over it, said Campbell. “I recall multiple fires where Jere was the Incident Commander and he didn’t get too worked up over things. He just kind of let the firefighters do their thing and put the fire out. He trusted his crew and things got done so I respect that about Jere and we’re going to miss him tremendously.”
