FERNDALE, Ca (KIEM) – A new jockey in town is leading the horse racing standings at the Humboldt County Fair. Jose Dominguez is a name local race fans are starting to get use to having reached the victory circle six times over three days of racing.

Jose Dominguez is off to a great start at the Ferndale race track with six wins. Despite being atop the standings, he’s remaining humble.

“So thankful with God, and I feel so good. I think this is my first year here, and I think we’re doing so well so far,” said Jose Dominguez, Redwood News Athlete of the Week.

Dominguez started racing horses as a teenager. The sport is something that just excites him.

“I was 13-years-old, Mexico City. Went to jock school, and then I started to ride races. I came to Northern California, and I rode races not too many years. Then I started working for the big trainers. I was so excited to win races,” said Dominguez.

Horse racing can be dangerous. Just last Sunday, a jockey sustained major injuries in a crash at the Ferndale track. Dominguez though isn’t afraid to get on his horse and hit the track.

“We don’t think about it. I don’t think about it. You know when you’re going to get on, but you don’t know when you’ll get off,” said Dominguez.

Dominguez wants to go all the way and win the jockey title. But he knows the competition won’t make it easy.

“Winning this is going to be amazing. It’s not over yet, but I think we’re working very hard for it. The competition is very, very tough. Very good riders here. But I hope we can do pretty good,” said Dominguez.
