FERNDALE, Ca (KIEM) – The final day of the Humboldt County Fair is here. Sunday youngsters auctioned off their animals in the Junior Livestock Show.

Blow drying the hair of your animal and brushing its legs. These junior livestockers keep their animals in top shape for months. That way, when they show off their lamb or pig at a competition, they place and win awards. That’s what Alexandra Morris had to do with her lamb.

“You win by having the best-looking lamb. I got fourth in my market class, that was out of seven. So you win by having them brace. Which means they tighten all their muscles, so they look really good. And you also win by being able to work with your lamb,” said Alexandra Morris, 13-Year-Old from McKinleyville.

Raising the animal for the show can be challenging. You have to train them to walk with you, feed it to be healthy in size, and teach them how to listen to you.

“I got very frustrated at my lamb when I was trying to walk him, and he wouldn’t walk for me. It takes a lot of patience and not giving up,” said Morris.

When the auction starts, it’s go time. People are ready to see what the junior livestockers come up with and bid for a price by the pound. The final presentation is all in fun to see how well they took care of their animal.

“How to raise an animal, do it correctly, [and] all of the paperwork and book work that goes into doing it. Bringing it here to the fair [and] showing it. Realizing the rewards of all of their hard work, and today’s the payoff,” said Lee Mora, an Auctioneer at the Junior Livestock Show.

The money that the youth make today from the selling of their animals will go towards their college education. For Morris, the savings is something she takes seriously.

“It’s not like oh let’s go buy a new laptop. It’s like a let’s save up for college so we can get into the best college we can,” said Morris.

Sunday concludes the last day of the Humboldt County Fair. Hear from the Fair Manager on Monday on Redwood News how the outcome was this year.
