ARCATA, Ca (KIEM) – Open Door Community Health Centers has a new clinic in the works. They plan to put the new Health Center near the intersection of Foster and Sunset Avenue in Arcata.

This new two-story building will be 31,000 square feet. Open Door is going to place it on the 1.8-acre land they purchased back in 2014. It will replace the two existing Arcata locations, Humboldt Open Door Clinic, and North Country Clinic.

The Open Door Community Health Centers’ new clinic building is estimated to be $12 million. It will provide four medical care teams that consist of: three or more providers, a registered nurse, four to five medical assistance, and a behavioral health specialist.

“The new clinic will consolidate the Humboldt Open Door Clinic on 10th Street and the North Country Clinic on 17th Street in Arcata into one new modern facility. State of the art facility,” said Laura Kadlecik, Project Manager.

There will also be 35 exam rooms. The first floor will consist of four procedure rooms, four consultation rooms, and a laboratory. The second floor will have conference rooms and a behavioral health suite with four counseling offices. It is a much-needed upgrade.

“The two existing clinics are quite antiquated. They’re old buildings. They were never intended to be health centers. They don’t really serve our needs very well,” said Kadlecik.

The Humboldt Area Foundation recently donated a $300,000 grant from the Orvamae Emmerson Endowment fund that will go towards construction design. It will pay open door $60,000 each year from June 2019 to June 2023.

“The Arcata facilities are really out of date. We really want to support them in being able to provide quality healthcare to everybody in the community,” said Patrick Cleary, Director of Community Prosperity and Investments for Humboldt Area Foundation.

“Upfront portion of the project that is critical to making it happen. Without their support, it would be that much harder for us to accomplish,” said Kadlecik.

Open door hopes to break ground for the new two-story building next year.

“Get our site work completed. That’s in 2020. In early 2021, move into the building site,” said Kadlecik.

The new Open Door Clinic in Arcata is projected to be complete in 2022. Currently, they’re in the process of getting permits for the 31,000 square foot facility.
