Arcata Police Department hopes Council Approves new position

Arcata, Ca., (KIEM) Wednesday night, Arcata City Council will decide if the Arcata Police Department will get the thumbs up for a new Evidence Technician position or not.

Over the past few months, the Arcata Police Department has been searching for the right candidates for current job openings the department has.

APD has currently two full-time positions for a Police Officer and Senior Dispatcher, and a part-time Parking Enforcement position.

Now, the department wants to add one more to the list.

If approved by the council, APD will have an official position for an evidence technician. The duties of this position will be to process crime scenes, preserve and collect evidence, manage the department’s property room, and store evidence for future cases.

Arcata Chief of Police said the department is gearing towards the future and with such position will aid the department in being one step closer to becoming a contemporary police department.

“The position will allow us to continue to enhance our investigative capacity and allow us to delegate responsibilities relative to Crime Scene management to someone who is specifically hired and trained for that responsibility.”
