Fortuna Police Chief presents plaque to Fortuna Volunteer Firefighters

Fortuna, Ca., (KIEM) Fortuna Police Chief Bill Dobberstein presented a plaque, praising the Fortuna Volunteer Firefighters, at Monday night’s city council meeting.

Monday evening, members of the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department was pleasantly surprised as they received a plaque for all the work the department does within the community.

From responding to medical calls and fires to being the first on the scene of a major car accident, Fortuna volunteer does it all, said the city’s chief of police.

Fortuna Fire Chief Winburn said he and his department were caught off guard but nonetheless they left feeling acknowledged and respected.

“For the most part the public doesn’t really know what a volunteer fire department does and the amount of hours and the amount of hardship that’s involved and you know there’s a lot of that,” said Fortuna Fire Chief, Lon Winburn. “Volunteer fire departments are so cost-effective and the commitment level these folks have is just unbelievable.”

The Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department has been serving the community for nearly 100 years.
