Humboldt State celebrates banned books and free speech

Arcata, Ca., (KIEM) Humboldt State University will take part in a national effort to celebrate the freedom to read and the First Amendment.

Beginning Sunday, September 22, Humboldt State is inviting the community to join in on Banned Books Week.

The week celebrates freedom of expression while bringing attention to the dangers of censorship.

During Banned Books Week, participants will read passages from books that have been challenged, censored, or banned in schools, libraries, and bookstores.

The initiative was launched in 1982 and is celebrated nationwide from September 22 to 28.

There will be a readout event on Tuesday, September 24 at 5 PM in front of the HSU Library.

Participants can choose from a selection of banned books owned by the HSU library or bring their own.

You must sign up for a time slot to participate.
