New festival coming to town of Trinidad

Trinidad, Ca., (KIEM) A new festival is coming to the town of Trinidad.

The California Coastal National Monument Festival is the first-ever of its kind and will be taking place next Saturday.

The festival is a community celebration of the coast. Specifically, the 20,000 offshore rocks that make up the California Coastal Monument.

There will be several events happening throughout the day including kayaking, fishing and much more.

A 10th-anniversary celebration of the Trinidad Museum will be the highlight of the festival taking place at the museum from 11 to 4 pm.

Carol Vander-Meer of the Trinidad Coastal Land Trust says people will be educated on so many aspects of the coast, come Saturday.

“We want to be sure that people understand this resource so that they can be partners in protecting it. For example, many of the offshore rocks are really important nesting sites for our seabirds so we will have some spotting scopes and you can learn about those seabirds and how they actually nest and lay their eggs on these really tiny edges on the rocks. Human disturbance can be a big factor so if people understand how to keep your space and your distance that will help the seabirds that’s just one example.”

The festival will be on Saturday starting as early as 8 AM. There will be overflow parking and shuttle buses available as well.
