KLAMTH (KIEM)- Due to public safety concerns, Redwood National and State Parks will demolish and remove the former Redwood Youth Hostel.

The final decision to remove the building comes after years of evaluation and steady deterioration of the hostel.

The seismic retrofit cost for the hostel estimates over 700-thousand dollars. During inspections for retrofitting, additional rot and damage was discovered.

In 2010, the hostel was closed for public safety. Since then, Redwood National and State Parks have unsuccessfully protected the property against vandals and squatters.

Redwood National and State Parks managers acknowledge the benefits of low-cost accommodations along the north coast and are open to explore partnerships for hostels or other low-cost accommodations.
