Yurok Tribe Receives United Nations’ Equator Prize

New York City, NY (KIEM) — The Yurok Tribe becomes one of the first two indigenous nations in the U.S. to receive the United Nations’ Development Program’s Equator Prize.  It recognizes the tribe’s progressive forest management practices and their forward-looking, climate change mitigation work.

The equator prize aims to acknowledge efforts to reduce poverty through environmentally sound projects. This year, 22 winners were selected from a pool of 847 nominations across 127 countries. Each winner also receives $10,000.

Tuesday night, council members from the tribe accepted the prize at the award ceremony in New York City.
