Diaper Distribution Underway for Low Income Parents

Eureka, Ca., (KIEM) A campaign is underway to help local low-income families with their babies.

On Monday, First 5 California- a local organization that helps parents and caregivers will partner up with additional family resource agencies to distribute a number of diaper kits.

The kits come with 100 diapers and 200 baby wipes.

The goal of this initiative is to address the growing issue of  “diaper need.” Along with closing the kindergarten readiness gap for children of low-income families.

“Looking at need for low-income families in California they realize that diapers are an incredible expense for families, in fact, if a family is receiving CalWORKS then it accounts for about 14% of their monthly budget,” said Mary Ann Hansen, Executive Director for First 5 California.

“On top of that, in 2017 there were 35,000 visits to emergency rooms in California for diaper related issues like urinary tract infections or severe diaper rashes so that resulted in a cost of about $53 million to California families in just that one year alone.”
