City of Eureka Returns Tuluwat Island to Wiyot Tribe

EUREKA (KIEM) – It’s a historic and emotional day for the city if eureka and the Wiyot Tribe here in Humboldt County.

The City of Eureka returned Tuluwat Island back to the Wiyot Tribe. The island is one of the three largest island in Humboldt Bay and spans about 280 acres.

Back in 2004, the city returned sixty acres of the Tuluwat Island to the tribe. After several years, they returned an additional forty acres.

Over 100 years ago, a massacre of women, children, and elders took place on that island during a religious ceremony.

The Wiyot Tribe is now planning a world renewal ceremony set for March 2020.
