Buried Whale Making Its Way Back to the Surface

Samoa, Ca. (KIEM) –The 30-foot humpback whale that was euthanized and buried on Samoa Beach is making its way back up to the surface.

Last Wednesday, the whale was beached in the surf zone and tangled in fishing gear just north of Samoa. Now, it’s beginning to bubble and ooze from the sand.

After attempts to get the whale back out to sea, it was determined it wouldn’t survive. The Northcoast Marine Mammal Center and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association made the decision to humanely euthanize it so it wouldn’t suffer.

It was moved up the beach and buried with heavy machinery on Friday night.
