Arcata Fire’s New Life Saving Tool

ARCATA, Ca. (KIEM) – Arcata Fire District deployed a new life saving tool during a medical emergency call.

The Lund University Cardiopulmonary Assist System, LUCUS, is designed to deliver high quality, and consistent chest compressions to cardiac arrest patients.

The device allows AFD to utilize firefighters to complete other critical tasks while assisting a cardiac arrest patient.

The LUCAS device is also safer for firefighters, and patients during transport in an ambulance.

Arcata Fire’s new device is housed at the Mad River Station and is currently the only one in the county.

A grant of the Christine and Jalmer Berg Foundation provided the device. More grants are being sought for other Arcata and McKinleyville stations.
