School Board Places Measure on Ballot to Address Albee Stadium Safety Hazards

Eureka, Ca. (KIEM) — The Eureka City School Board votes to place an emergency measure on the March ballot to address the safety hazards Albee Stadium poses for the Eureka High School community.

This comes after an assessment over the summer by independent engineers and city public works. They found that dangerous sinkholes have already developed, and additional sinkholes can develop in the future without warning.

This is due to a failing culvert that runs under the school’s football and baseball fields. The school already closed and condemned the welding shop a little over a year ago to protect students.

The measure on the ballot would mean that the average citizen would pay roughly 34-dollars a year in order for the project to be completed. At the end of the day, Eureka City Schools’ main priority is the safety of students, faculty, and the surrounding community.

Eureka City Schools is also looking to qualify for additional state matching funds to take on the work.
