Roadkill Remains Illegal To Possess, Despite New Year

California (KIEM)– Starting January 1st 2020, roadkill will remain illegal to possess, despite recent passage of new act.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is reminding drivers that it will remain illegal to collect or possess roadkill animals even after the New Year.

SB 395- Chapter 869 or the Wildlife Traffic Safety Act was enacted with the intent to eventually make available for utilization the roadkill meat of deer, elk, pronghorn antelope or wild pig.

The legislative language does not permit the general public collection of roadkill. SB 395 only allows the CDFW to adopt regulations to establish a wild game meat utilization program.
