Fortuna, Ca. (KIEM) – In the event of an emergency, law enforcement and medical crews play a critical role. However, in some situations, the first person to assist may not be medically certified.

This is why crews from all over the region came together in Fortuna for a combat lifesaver course.

The 3-day lifesaver course blended hands-on training with classroom lectures to help save lives both on and off the field.

Law enforcement, medical, and fire personnel merged together in real-life scenarios where there is a traumatic injury to both patients as well as law enforcement.

The intent is for law enforcement, fire and EMS to understand what critical care is all about when it comes to more severe types of wounds.

Gunshots, explosions, hostage situations were all performed under intense simulations.

The training also gives personnel a closer look at the types of stress involved in an active shooter situation.

First responders engage in this training exercise so they have the proper skills and communication tactics necessary so everyone is safe.

Upon completion of the course, participants are certified for one year and an annual re-certification is required.
