How Calfresh Benefit Cuts Will Impact Humboldt County Recipients

Humboldt County, Ca. (KIEM) — The Trump Administration is making some changes to the federal food stamp program — and some Humboldt County residents are being affected. The changes center on tightening the work requirement to enroll in the snap program or Calfresh benefits.

Across the country, more than 650,000 people could see their benefits cut. It is set to go into effect on April 1st. Here locally, roughly 22,000 people rely on food stamps or some other food assistance program. That’s 11,000 households in the county. Over 2,500 people are at risk of losing their benefits or will be negatively impacted by the changes.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, a cut to benefits would lower access to healthy, nutritious food. California — and 13 other states — recently announced they are suing the trump administration to block the rule.
