Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services Monitoring Coronavirus Outbreak

Eureka, Ca. (KIEM) — The first case of the coronavirus has been confirmed in the U.S. in the state of Washington, but how prepared is Humboldt County if a virus outbreak was to happen here locally?

The coronavirus is a cousin of the SARS virus and originally broke out in China and spread to other countries in Asia, before finally making its way to the U.S. The virus affects the respiratory system. Symptoms include a runny nose, headache, cough, sore throat, and fever. The CDC has issued travel alerts for passengers heading to affected areas, and U.S. airports are also screening travelers coming from the region.

It’s important to note that no cases have been confirmed in California or Humboldt County, but the department of health and human services is aware of and carefully monitoring the situation. Despite the unlikeliness of the virus spreading to the north coast, DHHS and the communicable disease unit wants to assure residents they are taking precautions to make sure everyone stays safe.

If you or someone you know is planning on traveling to the affected regions, you can go to the CDC’s website for the most up to date travel alerts.
