Food for People and Humboldt Cider Company Launch New Cider to Fight Food Waste

Eureka, Ca. (KIEM) — Food for People and the Humboldt Cider Company are teaming up to tackle the issue of food waste here in our local community.

Through their partnership, the non-profit and local business are launching a new craft cider made from apples that would have otherwise gone to waste. It’s named “Cider for People” and is made from local apples like Gravenstein and Golden Delicious. Seventeen percent of all sales from the cider go directly to Food for People’s gleaning program, which helps bridge the gap between local food surplus and food insecurity.

This time of year, the food bank typically sees large donations of apples but sometimes they aren’t able to use all of them. With the goal of reducing food waste here on the North Coast in mind, the idea for the cider was born.

The new cider will be unveiled at a special event at the Humboldt Cider Company tap room on Tuesday February 4th from 2 to 10 pm.
