Small Plane Crashes into Humboldt Bay, Pilot Rescued by Emergency Personnel

Woodley Island, Ca. (KIEM) — The pilot of a small plane is rescued after making an emergency landing into the Humboldt Bay.

It happened shortly before 7:30 Thursday morning just East of Woodley Island near the Samoa Bridge. According to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, it was a delivery plane transporting packages traveling from Sacramento in route to McKinleyville. The male pilot was the only person on board.

A U.S. Coast Guard and Port Authority boat was deployed to the scene. The pilot was rescued and transported by ambulance to St. Joseph’s Hospital. The pilot sustained minor injuries, but HCSO says he was alert and talking with first responders.

At this time, the cause of the crash is unknown. According to HCSO, wind or fog may have been a factor, but the official cause will be determined by an FAA investigation.

Moving forward, the focus is getting the plane out of the water so the FAA to begin their investigation.
