Sequoia Zoo begins construction on Redwood Sky Walk

Eureka, Ca (KIEM)- Construction on Redwood Sky Walk at Sequoia Zoo will begin, following a groundbreaking ceremony.

President of the Sequoia Park Zoo Foundation says this project has been in the works since 2006, at the cost of just under $3M.

“It reinforces the zoo conservation efforts and the natural world,” Mike Deardan More importantly allows the community and outside the area learn more about what native to and what makes this place unique.”

The elevated walkway, with a network of suspended bridges through old growth Redwood Trees, will start off the end of the zoo and go back off the entrance road, then go up 100 FT up in the air looking over ravines.

Redwood Sky Walk will be built within and will extend beyond the zoo’s borders.

At its highest point, one bridge will be about 100ft from the forest floor, one third the way up the redwoods. The total distance of the walkways will be 1090 linear feet of visitor experience.

Once completed, Deardan is expecting people from all over the world to come see the spectacle.

“We are looking to bringing people in regionally both nationwide and international to have this unique experience where they can go up into old growth redwood trees,” he said.

Executive Director of Sequoia Park Zoo Foundation said the project was a long time coming.

“The project is fully funded, that is why we are at this point, because we are fully funded,” Leigh Pierre-Oetker said. “And we are ready to break ground. As our bear and coyote exhibit has now been fully funded and we will work on the design of that this month. “

Zoo admission is expected to go up to accommodate the new visitor experience. General zoo admission will get you access to the new Redwood Sky Walk and bear and coyote exhibit.

The attraction will be ADA accessible to allow everyone the opportunity to experience a walk through mature redwood trees.

Redwood Sky Walk is expected to open in September.
