EUREKA, Ca (KIEM)-The decision to keep Eureka City Schools open amid the Covid-19 virus changed, after a second emergency meeting late Sunday afternoon.

The school board met at the district office and decided to cancel classes until (tentatively) April 20th. The board had earlier decided to stay open following the recommendations of the County Department of Health, but after a brief second meeting, board members received new information and made the move to keep students and staff away from school locations in Eureka.

Eureka City Schools Superintendent said the decision was based information coming from the Office of Governor Gavin Newsom.

“We had an emergency meeting set for 1 p.m., actually that is the exact same time that Gov. Newsom had his press conference, and so based on some of the information he had in his press conference, that mainly people over the age of 65 need to self-quarantine right now.

“Makes it very questionable if we can have the appropriate workforce to address the needs of our children.

“So we re-met as a board and the board of trustees in a second meeting and decided to not have school not in session all the way through spring break -and tentatively students coming back on April 20th.

“That’s going to depend on where we’re at with the Covid-19 virus at that time,” Fred Van Vleck said.
