12 residents displaced after fire in Crescent City

CRESCENT CITY, Ca (KIEM)-Twelve residents are displaced after the surf apartments catches fire in Crescent City.

At around 12:30 Thursday afternoon, crescent city fire and rescue responded to the 100 block of H Street. Once on scene, smoke was coming from the fourth floor of the apartment building.

A laundry basket with clothing and a bed caught fire in one of the bedrooms but a sprinkler head prevented the fire from spreading.

The Del Norte County Office of Emergency Services and the Red Cross are helping to find temporary housing for the displaced occupants.

The fire department said the cause appears to be a cigarette that was dropped between the bed and laundry basket and damage is estimated at $50,000.

The Pelican Bay State Prison Fire department and CalFire also responded to the blaze.
