Eureka Police Release Data on Crime During Shelter in Place

Eureka, Ca. (KIEM) — The Eureka Police Department releases an update for the community on the number of calls for service they have received over the first 10 days of the shelter in place order.

During this 10-day period, EPD handled an average of 244 incidents a day, including fire and medical. 48% of all incidents were officer initiated. An increase of 56% compared to before the mandate went into effect. The most common call types were medical, suspicious persons, and disturbances. Police chief Steve Watson adds that there does appear to be an increase in burglaries.

Eureka police understand this is a difficult time for residents and continues to do all they can to serve the community. A reminder that EPD will also be suspending false alarm billing for the months of March and April in hopes of offsetting hardships felt by citizens and businesses.
