HSU budget directive issued in response to recruitment, retention reality

EUREKA, Ca (KIEM) – On April 2, an email was sent to all three Humboldt State University academic deans with a budget directive that was issued in response to the recruitment and retention reality at HSU.

Current estimates project a fall 2020 freshman class of approximately 500 students, which is 900 less than the 2015 freshman class of 1,400 students.

Given that the low enrollment directly effects the institutional budget, HSU’s Interim Provost Lisa-Bond Maupin has directed the three academic deans to reduce spending and work on growing their retention and recruitment rates.

Maupin has suggested actions such as freezing all vacant staff positions and developing online degree completion opportunities for certain existing majors.
