Hoopa, Ca. (KIEM) — Things appear on the mend between the Hoopa Valley Tribe and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office following some confusion over who has the authority to shut down State Route 96.

The tribal council wants a traffic checkpoint on the highway, but after consulting with the California Highway Patrol, Caltrans, and Governor Newsom’s office, Sheriff Honsal says that’s not in the tribe’s jurisdiction.

Instead, a checkpoint will be set up once people pull off the freeway and into the downtown area, but some tribal members aren’t happy with that decision.one thing both parties are definitely on the same page about? That the safety of all Hoopa Valley tribal members and residents is most important.

HCSO does not have authority over tribal roads. Tribal Police are able to stop non-locals to warn them about the restrictions in place and even remove them from the reservation if necessary.
