Fortuna Man Arrested After Firing Riffle at Trinity County Sheriff’s Deputy

TRINITY COUNTY, Ca. (KIEM)– A Fortuna man is arrested after firing a riffle at Trinity County Sheriff’s Deputies while serving a search warrant at a marijuana grow in Southern Trinity.

The Sheriff’s Office said at around 9:30 Monday morning, Luis Hernan Cornejo-Becerra discharged a rifle at deputies.

A deputy returned fire and Cornejo-Becerra fled into a wooded area. The California Highway Patrol Helicopter assisted and the suspect was located and taken into custody.

Becerra was taken to the Trinity County Jail and charged with assault against a peace officer with a firearm, illegal procession with a switchblade, possession of methamphetamine and marijuana.

The deputy who discharged their firearm is on administrative leave until the investigation by the California Highway Patrol is complete. The Sheriff’s Office said the marijuana operation was conducted on private property without the owners consent
