EUREKA, Ca (KIEM) – The Humboldt County Public Health Department has provided Redwood Urgent Care in Eureka with COVID testing kits to get a better sense of the spread in Humboldt County.

Redwood Urgent Care not only has the ability to test residents for COVID, but they are testing people that have mild symptoms. The testing kit is called the PCR kit and is conducted with a nasal swab by the patient themselves.

“We’re very excited because this new test,” Nurse Practitioner Ragan Camper said. “The patient can perform it themselves while sitting in their car. So this requires less personal protective equipment supplies and it’s safer for our employees.”

Testing is not being done inside the clinic itself and Redwood Urgent Care has asked patients with mild symptoms to schedule a telemedicine appointment through their direct line.

“They’ll get a telemedicine health appointment schedule and after that visit they’ll get an appointment scheduled to come by the clinic and actually collect the sample,” Camper said. “That test will be collected in the patient’s car.”

And then the sample will be sent to the Public Health Department and the patient will be contacted within three days with their results.

“I would encourage people that have a primary care provider to check with their office to see if they are offering testing,” Camper said. “And if they are not we are happy to see them here through telemedicine and test them here.”

There is no charge for the PCR test if you have insurance. For those that are not insured, a telemedicine appointment through Redwood Urgent Care costs $75.

Redwood Urgent Care received word that in the future, they might be able to conduct testing for patients that are not showing any symptoms.
