LOLETA, Ca. (KIEM)-Nearly a year ago, three local teens were selected to serve District 1 as the 2019-2020 dairy princesses.

However, Covid-19 put a damper on how they serve their communities.

Halee Nickols is District 1 Humboldt & Del Norte Counties’ dairy princess.

“Once you are selected you have the responsibilities of going out to community events,” said Nickols. Events that have now been cancelled amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Normally the dairy princesses, her alternate and 2nd alternate will share their message at schools to teach the community about why it’s important to support local dairymen, according to Nickols.

With school sites closed, getting in front of a live audience is no longer an option.

According to dairy princess Nickols and her 2nd alternate, Brianna Brazil, they have now moved online.

“It has been difficult for us throughout this pandemic because we are not able to go and do that face on face interaction so we’ve been doing a lot of online stuff,” said Nickols.

“As a result of the Coronavirus, the princesses and I have set-up an Instagram and Facebook page so we can put out some fun facts about the California dairy industry,”  said Brazil.

Alternate dairy princess Grace Miller says she’s disappointed, she too, can no longer visit schools.

Those looking for fun facts and information on the dairy industry can visit their social media pages for those factoids once or twice a week.

They are to kind of spread the word and tell the public what the dairy industry is about, according to Miller.

For the dairy princesses, it’s about supporting the community they live in.

“Always remember to drink milk and support your local farmers,” Miller said.

A new contest date will be set to select the 2020-2021 dairy princesses and will be posted on “District 1 Dairy Princess Contest Humboldt/Del Norte Counties” Facebook page or click here.
