EUREKA, Ca. (KIEM)-College of the Redwoods’ personnel was informed in a recent email, some positions will be eliminated and vacant positions will remain vacant for the 20-21 academic year.

“The governor did not say how we do it, but what the governor and our chancellor have said is that we know it’s going to be challenging for colleges make sure that you protect students,” said CR District President and Superintendent Keith Snow-Flamer.

Unfortunately 19 classified-union jobs, considered administrative support, and two management positions within the college will not be protected, they will be let go.

Five vacant positions ranging from directors and deans will remain vacant.

The layoffs are expected to happen sometime in August and will be in phases.

Snow-Flamer says he will be bring his recommendation to the board on June 2nd.

“First phase was based on our initial budget forecast and the worst-case scenario was 8-percent.

The college was facing a $1.3 million deficit due to decreased state funding before the impact of COVID-19 had been accounted for.

Given the COVID situation and Governor Gavin Newsom’s budget, moving to phase two rapidly was the best choice for CR.

“I have to accelerate phase two which is additional releases but also cutting some other operational budgets.

Snow-Flamer says his goal is, not to touch instruction.

“Because our classes are the engine that run the car, and if I start cutting the engine, then it’s a spiral,” said Snow-Flamer. “And I really want to be a strategic as we possibly can.”

What CR is trying to do is make this process as transparent with students as possible, students should not feel the impact when it comes to services according to Snow-Flamer.

“Although we may not have the same number of bodies, the services will still be there in some capacity.

Snow-Flamer says sometimes being in his positions requires tough decisions to be made.

“I really love my job, this is the best job I’ve ever had, but this is the hardest part of the job.

Amid this difficult time at the community college, CR will present a graduation video on June 2nd to honor the 468 graduates.

The formal commencement ceremony was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.
