Local organization took lead on demonstration

EUREKA, Ca. (KIEM)-A local organization took the lead this week to stand in solidarity with the nation in protest of police brutality after video surfaced showing a Minnesota police officer kneel on the neck of George Floyd ultimately killing him.

Humboldt Grassroots searched online and asked community members if a protest in the name of George Floyd had been created, it hadn’t.

The group felt compelled to take the lead and organized the first and second protest in Eureka.

According to Humboldt Grassroots organizer Tiffany “Tif” Lafayette, once folks caught wind, the response was overwhelming.

Lafayette says protesting is about uniting together for one cause.

Humboldt Grassroots organizers opted to reschedule the second protest to allow for some logistic changes.

When Humboldt grassroots first put out the call for a demonstration to stand in solidarity with George Floyd and those that have been murdered by the police state they realized there wasn’t a strong affiliation with minority groups.

Humboldt Grassroots organizer Mario Fernandez said Sunday’s rally was pushed back three hours to allow for more preparation per the request of community members who come from black, brown and Indigenous groups.
