EPD Chief Watson Endorses National Police Reform

EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM) – In light of recent events police departments across the country are re-evaluating policies. The California Police Chief Association has released a platform for nationwide reform based on California law.

This new platform has been endorsed by Eureka’s Chief of Police Steven Watson. Accountability, a key element is one of the top five values and goals Chief Watson put into place after being sworn in that he continues to reiterate to the entire police department.

The platform begins with a statement condemning, “acts of excessive force and racially bias policing in the country.”

Ahead of this platform, on June 6, 2020 the Eureka Police Department took steps to further eliminate the potential for excessive force. The carotid restraint was banned except for in life or death situations.

Chief Watson encourages the community to look at examples of  SB1421. The new transparency law in California gives the public a better idea of the complexity, depth, and thoroughness that goes into major miss conduct investigations.
