Dr. Frankovich gives an update on what we know about Covid-19 and how it circulates

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) — As the Covid-19 pandemic has unfolded, more information has come out giving us a better idea of what the virus looks like and how it circulates in the community.

When it comes to the age range of cases locally, County Health Officer Dr. Frankovich says that it’s actually skewing towards younger adults, which is supported by the hospitalization rates. Right now, we know of 48 cases among people under the age of 40.

As far as means of transmission, Public Health is leaning towards larger droplets that come out of your mouth and travel in the air while talking, sneezing or coughing as the main mode of transmission, hence the 6 feet distancing guidance. Dr. Frankovich adds that we know blocking these droplets with a mask can help.

The virus has been detected on surfaces, which is why public health is encouraging frequent cleanings. As far as how prominent that is for transmission of the virus, Dr. Frankovich says that hasn’t been well established yet.
