HCSO COVID-19 concerns over inmate releases

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) – The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office prepares for more inmates to be released early in order to slow the spread of COVID-19 in the state prison system.

Sheriff Honsal said he does not agree with how the state is handling the issue. He said the problem is being pushed on the county with no offer of resources or space to address the issue. Honsal said he feels that these releases endanger the community. The county probation office and public health are coordinating to find temporary housing which Honsal said should instead be used for Humboldt County residents and the homeless.

Honsal said there should be assurance that the inmates are not COVID-19 positive so they can start the rehabilitation process safely. The county is working to find a way to prevent the virus from spreading as a result of these releases.
