Humboldt Bay Fire extinguishes Eureka motel fire, man charged with arson

EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM) — A fire at a Eureka motel that was intentionally set is extinguished thanks to the quick response of Humboldt Bay Fire.

Just before 11 Tuesday morning, crews responded to the flamingo hotel on the 4200 block of Broadway for a report of flames inside of a room and possibly a man stuck inside.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they found a pile of clothes on fire. According to officials, it appears the fire was intentionally set and the man then fled the room.

The fire was controlled and extinguished within minutes of crews arriving on scene. No injuries were reported and damages to the room are minimal, roughly $2,000.

According to Brittany Powell, the public information officer for the Eureka Police Department, 31 year old Steven Mooney was taken into custody at the Bayshore Mall shortly after the fire and was arrested for arson.
