Weise named HSU Rowing head coach amid pandemic

ARCATA, Calif. (KIEM) – Matt Weise was named head coach of the Humboldt State Rowing Team in July.

Weise assumed the role after coaching at Michigan State University from 2004 to 2019. He led MSU to three Big Ten titles and 11 Big Ten individual titles. Weise coached several national team members, 79 National Scholar Athletes, and 40 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars.

Weise first met with his assistant coaches after becoming head coach. He also began voluntary practices via Zoom to help athletes stay in shape during the COVID-19 pandemic. Weise said these practices are valuable as they allow him to interact with athletes and establish relationships.

Weise said he wants to continue this success at HSU both in and out of the water. He encourages his athletes to help out in the community and make a difference during these times.
