Man arrested after shooting into neighbor’s house causing standoff

McKINLEYVILLE, Calif. (KIEM) – One man is in custody after a shooting and subsequent standoff took place with police in McKinleyville.

That man is 39-year-old Ryan Shaw of McKinleyville.

The incident started around 6 p.m. on the 2000 block of Thiel Avenue.

Police say Shaw shot into his neighbor’s house from the confines of his own home. That started the standoff in which dozens of police and other emergency personnel were on scene for more than two hours.

During this time, a reverse 911 was sent out to area residents warning those to either shelter in place  or avoid the area altogether.

Police were able to safely remove the neighbor from her home, but authorities say that Shaw continued to fire his gun during the course of the standoff.

Multiple roads were closed in the area during the incident and local authorities had to use the parking lot of the Church of the Light as a staging center.

At roughly 8:30 p.m., SWAT Officers were able to convince Shaw to come outside where he was then taken into custody without further incident.

Police say the outcome could have been much worse.

Although mental crisis is believed to be a factor, the cause of the incident is still under investigation. More information will be released as it becomes available.
